Field Maintenance Tip of the Day …… Mound Maintenance
With infield mix on the mounds now, the fields look very nice. However, it is very important that we maintain the mounds properly going forward. To this we must avoid filling any holes that develop with existing infield mix already on the mounds. This will prevent compaction of the clay and the hole that develops will continue to return. The proper maintenance procedure is as follows:
- Sweep the infield mix thoroughly to a side of the mound (this is critical)
- Rake loose clay into the damage holes
- Add water and additional clay as necessary
- Tamp the clay to eliminate air and compress the clay together to a 1/4 inch of the top of the mound
- Add some loose mound dirt and tamp in to mound surface height
- Rake infield mix back on the mound to a 1/8 inch max depth.
